Depends on what you want cheap or pricey. YOu can go to autozone, discount autos, and get cheap one, and it has a good warrenty with it. Or you can get an expensive one, jasper and a slew of others. There are a ton of options, but if you want cheap go to autozone or discount.
As another option check with your local machine shops preferably one that has been known to do the job right. Sometimes they will build one for what you would expect to pay at a local autoparts store, sometimes a machine/ engine building shop with offer some options on pistons and cams that would pep the motor up a little from stock for the same price or relatively close. And this way the work is usually a little more one on one with the motor not a production type rebuild. Whatever you do check the company or person out and to be safe if you don't know the machinist or know a friend of the machinist I would get ready to gamble, usually the machinist/ engine builder will provide a warranty sometimes they don't depends on weather or not they build a lot of race motors or stock replacements. Just a thought Good luck
Appreciate the come back. will take under advisement.
jwtaylor: I have read your post on the MAF, FANTASTIC will you fly to NYC to do this job for me!!!!!!???LOL. I have not found a single MECH how knows what i am talking about. Is there a motor with the MAF that i can buy??. or should i just stick to a replacement. I have 138000 miles on my motor and looking for long term reliabiliy, also pull a 19ft boston whaler once in a while.
I am pretty sure all 96 v8's had mass air (or MAF) the california vehicles used it for a few years previously for emissions reasons. You should be able to handle it no problem to be honest with you. There are kits available for this as mentioned if you read the earlier response, give it a shot. Here are two related articles I found outlining the "how to" using a pieced together maf conversion. If someone did a tech article on it you can bet anyone can do it, no offense to the author but usually the tech articles listed on various website homepages are pretty straight forward once you look it over. As mentioned these are junkyard or sourced parts conversions so a complete kit would make it even easier take a look, the first link actually lists part numbers so you could order new parts if you wanted, I mentioned this in another post if it were myself I would opt for the truck computer there isn't supposed to be a difference but well you never know, it would work fine but I am like that if it came out of a truck then put it in a truck or vice versa. Who knows? good luck with your project, later
