I had an old '99 ranger that I sold to my little brother probably 7 years ago. I think it has close to 200k miles on it. It's XLT sport, 5 speed manual with a 2.4 4cylinder in it, stepside bed. Anyway, he never drives it anymore and his gf is tired of it being around and I could probably get it back for $500 bucks (I sold it to him for $1000 to help him out). Would this be worth building into a prerunner, or is it not really a good truck to start on? Can that 4 cyl even turn big wheels or would I need a crate engine? I've never really looked into doing this before but my other brother kind of put it in my head and after watching some youtube videos it looks like fun. Plus this was my first truck I ever bought when I was 18 so I kinda want to buy it back from him for nostalgia.
Can anyone give me some good links/resources to research what it would take to transform this thing??
in my opinion, (ymmv), if you plan on dumping 10-15 grand into it you can build a great prerunner. Suspension, engine, drive train, cooling system, tires, fenders widened/cut, roll cage, lights, brush guards, etc will all need to be changed out/added and are not cheap. Prerunners were meant to "prerun" the baja style race courses and half to 2/3rd speed so the driver could "pre determine" his path.
if you are talking about making a cheap beater woods truck with a small lift and bigger tires/rims, thats a different game.
