Rust never sleeps

Hey folks.

Wondering what one can do to prevent or at least slow rusting. Mine is an 01 250 cc 7.3l. When I bought the truck, there was already some surface rust underneath. Drive shaft, some nuts, etc. I plan on having the truck for a long time. I live on Long Island, drive on the beach sometimes and spend a lot of time in VT in the winter. This seems like an equation for rust. At least it has been with other cars & trucks. Whats a good way to minimize rusting? Some friends in VT suggest getting the undercarriage sprayed with oil. They don't do that here on Long Island, but I guess they do in VT. Do the newer trucks rust that bad? Does the oil trick work? What do you guys do, if anything to ward off rust, or is it "better to burn out cause rust never sleeps?"

Thanks,
-Shawn

There is a paint that stops rust dead forever. Also I'm trying to get hold of a mineral oil based spray that they use in canada..
email me and I'll tell you what the paint is..

spraying it with oil is the way to go. much better than regular rustproofing which often just traps moisture. you have to get it re-sprayed every year or two, just watch it and get it done again when it starts to look dry. Grease is also good. I have been under my '03 with a paintbrush and a small tub of wheel bearing grease several times, coating down the areas that are getting surface rust. I don't think you need to worry about the driveshaft, but it's good to protect the frame, which I know can be weakened by rust in 10 years or less where it's salty. This is like a favorite topic (or biggest worry) of mine.

Move out here to Arizona and you'll never have to worry about rust again. The trade off is that all your gaskets and rubber components will dry rot!

They have 1930s era cars out here that have never needed body work!

Hey, thanks guys.

Did a stint in Riverside, CA. The southwest just ain't for me. Too hot, and something about missing the seasons. "It's not the heat, its the humidity." Yeah, until its 110 out. Plus the lack of an ocean is a big deal. Nice for vehicles though. Dunno, lotsa people moving to AZ. Something must be right.

Gotta e mail about the paint. Maybe I'll try the oil spray. I will have to check it out next time I'm up north.

Thanks for the advice.

I live in Central New Hampshire and I just had my F250 oiled last weekend. The process takes about an hour and really makes a mess, the best thing to do is drive on a dirt road after oiling. Make sure any under truck maintenance is done before oiling and plan for a couple of hours cleanup on the painted surfaces. I have this done yearly. I have had this done on previous trucks and I think it definately helps.
