Question Hard Starting Bronco?

I just recently picked up a 1994 Bronco 5.8L and right away noticed that the Bronco had a hard time starting. I instantly assumed that the Plugs, Cap and Rotor needed replacing. After replacing these parts along with the fuel filter, I still have the same problem. The engine will not start on the first crank ever. It usually starts on the second or third crank and when the engine is hot it will not start till the third or fourth crank. What I mean by a crank is turning the ignition and holding it for about a second or two. I am trying to avoid burning up a starter. Could this issue be a timing problem? A fuel injector problem? The engine runs and sounds great once started with no misses or bad idle. I am going to check the timing myself but I am a little confused as to what I am supposed too disconnect on the distributor before I determine the correct degree of timing? What is the timing supposed to be set at? Any pointers would really be appreciated? Thanks everyone.

Wow, this must be a tough question or no one has ever seen this problem before. Here is a little more info on my problem. When the engine is cold the Bronco starts on the first time cranking the engine? When the engine is hot, it is a pain in the *** to start. Does anyone think this sounds like an electrical issue like maybe the ignition module?

3 - 4 seconds of cranking is nothing to worry about. You're certainly not going to burn up the starter that quickly. The manual probably suggests something like 30 seconds of cranking max.

The timing is controled by the computer, so changing it (exception base timing) will have little to no effect. I'd check the coil. Sounds as though you have fuel, and lack spark. The biggest problem is that when it is easy to start, the computer has not started to control anything. After the engine warms up, the sensors take over. It could be a temperatrue sensor, fuel pressure regulator, knock sensor, ect. I'd take it to a shop and have them pull the codes. That's be best starting place. Just make sure it's hot when you get it on the machine!

You can pull them yourself, if you don't mind messing up a perfectly good paperclip. Check your Haynes manual.

Try turning the key....

Try turning the key to the "RUN" position 3 or 4 times and prime up the fuel system, then try starting it. If it starts immediately, I would suspect the fuel pump. My Bronco does this. It never starts immediately when cranking, unless you get the fuel pressure up.

Thanks to everyone for the tips, but I think "wheelie" made the right guess. Everytime I try starting the Bronco now, I build up the fuel pressure by turnign the key to on about three times before actually starting the bronco now and it starts on the first crank everytime whether it is hot or cold. Now the big question is do I replace the fuel pump or try and find what is releasing the fuel pressure in the fuel line. I thought in a fuel injection system that it will maintain fuel pressure for a long period of time. Or am I thinking wrong? I guess the fuel pressure could be released back through the fuel pump? Ecspecially a bad pump.

it could be the pump, regulator or leaking injector, you need to do the proper test, so you dont spend money on something thats not broke. DW

I know this is someone else's post, but just how do you release the pressure in the oine? I have to change the fuel filter and I heard you have to release the pressure before removing the filter.
