All other things being equal, which would tow a 13K fifth wheel the best? 3-valve 6.8 with the 5 speed transmission, or the early 6.2 with the 6 speed? Basically, 2010 vs. 2011?
For gas engines of that vintage the 6.8 V10 is best, more torque due to more displacement and more horsepower. The 6.2 is also a fine engine, just not as strong as the 6.8. Make sure the truck has low (numerically high) rear axle gearing for pulling that much weight. Good Luck, Russ
If the 6.8 was offered in 2016 on the F350, I would have it in my 2016. I liked the way the V10 pulled in my 2000 with the manual transmission. I feel it pulled as well, maybe better, than my 2016 with the 4.3. My 2000 had 3.73 rear end.
I really like the 2005-2007 vintage. Currently, I have an Excursion, with the 2 valve 6.8 and 4r100 and 3.73 gears. It pulls our 10K TT well, albeit in 3rd gear pretty exclusively. Since we are going fifth wheel in the next few years, I'm looking for something close to what I am comfortable working on. It seems like the 5 speed auto essentially splits two gears around the old 4r100's first, with the top three ratios being the same. I've never felt the old v-10 lacked for power, and feel that a 3-valve with 4.30 gears and the 5 speed automatic should pull really well. Also don't want to spend over 20K for a truck because I'm cheap.
