4.10 swap

I have a 1993 F-150 with a 300, 5 speed manual, 3.05 gears, and my tire size is 235/75/15. I was thinking about swapping my 3.05 ring and pinion for a 4.10. Right now when I'm doing 75 i pull about 2000 rpms. How big of a change will there be?

P.S. I'm not realy woried about the gas milage.

you'll probably be pulling close to 3000 with that arrangement. just remember that the faster you spin the engine the more wear you cause. you may want to consider a less drastic change. what do you need the lower gers for?

Well my truck already has 180000 miles on it and it is running strong. The way i drive it it will be notime before I'm rebuilding the motor anyway. The reason i want it is for racing.Do you think that 3.83s will be better?

the 4.11 will give great takeoff but i don't think you'll have much top end.... you'll run out too quick. personally i think something like 3.73 or 3.83 would be better. i'm sure someone else here has had experience with these ratios and can comment more. I have 3.55 with my 5.0 running 255/55/18 and 3.00 with my 6cyl running 31" 10.50. At 75 in overdrive with my AOD tranny and 5.0 i'm turning about 2500 rpm

The big six is a great engine and it's there for the long run, but it's not going anywhere fast.

it all depends on how you build it. but of course it will never be as good as a v8.

I've seen posts of boosted 300's w/ 400HP - maybe more. The six will go as fast as you can afford to. I think I saw an 8.65 quarter mile - that would be fast enough for me...

True true, but since he was talking about a stock 300 w/ 180k on it, i don't think he's gonna be runnin 8s

Yeah, my mod'd 6 prolly wouldn't turn an 8 in the 1/8 mile. Back to the original post - I noticed today that my 3.50 gears were spinnin' 3000 rpm @ 75 mph, 3300 rpm @ 85 and I don't know what @ 4,000 rpm...

Since gearing is a math thing, going from 3.0 (for example) to 4.0 gears, your rpms (with the same tires) would increase when measured at the same mph (say 75 ). To find out how much, you'd multiply the rpms (2000) by the new gear ratio (in this case 4 ) then divide that number by the old ratio (3 ). So 2000 X 4 = 8000. Divided by three, that's 2666. 3.05's to 4.10's would push that a tad higher, but I don't have a calculator handy, nor the patience to do it by hand. You'd be doin' 'bout 2700 rpm @ 75 with the 4.10's & no other changes ( tire diameter).

I wish I had that 5th speed overdrive - it drops cruise rpm nicely.
