If you want really cheap check out hi-tech retreading in the back of 4x4 magazines. I've used their tires on a samurai for 3 years now. The mud tires are same tread as kumho's. I spent 240 dollars for 5 of them. They wear really good, the traction is awesome and they meet my needs perfectly. The vehicle is light-weight and goes slow so I am not concerned about them being re-caps.

I'd go with the BFG mt. I had a cheap set of bfg look a likes (marshall) on my last truck and they worked ok but you could see the tread going down after ever road trip with 1200 lb camper (200 miles). BFGs have better side walls. My cheep set sliced real easy and I had to replace tires. That can make them expesive in a hurry. Not to say BFG are uncuttable but so far the ones Im running are holding up great. The curent truck is a power stroke and with all the weight on them they are unscard so far. I've only got about 2000 miles on them but close to half is gravel and off road. But at the end of the day you still got to stay with whats in the budget.

If you want a good affordable mud tire try the Wild Country radial rvt they make 3 different styles of the rvt ranging from really agressive to a moderate tire. Also try general grabber m/t,buckshot mudder, cooper tire or courser, mastercraft even makes a tire, and you can get Super Swampers for a decent price depending on size, My uncle just picked up 4 TRXUS MT 31/10.50 15 for $105.00 a tire

The wild countrys are a great tire for your off road to on-road ratio. and the rubber compound in them seems to last forever, im not sure on the aggresivness of the tread on my wild countrys, but the only area they seem to lack in is thick mud. the best thing about them is that they are cheap

We have had tried two sets of wild countries and they wear out very fast the current ones have around 18,000 miles and are worn out, and yes they are rotated every 5,000 miles and at the correct pressure. I just purchased a set of Big O Big Foot X/T's and so far they are great, pretty agresssive tread but still sutible for the road. Hope they work out.

another tire tossed into the mix here, and what i just ordered today.....the Nitto Terra Grappler. i priced the big o tires, about 760 out the door.... the nittos in the same size, 285/75/16 are going to be 535 to my door, yet still need mounting and balancing....so about another 50-60 bux.

i got these for the snow/ice traction, i do little mud (hard to find), but ice and snow are common where i live. the nitto has a ton of sipes, deep too, not like the bfg T/A's! also, they are in between a mud and a/t as far as tread design goes....

will report back once i get them in the snow, and some mud....

best price, and free shipping came from tires.com for me, your milage may vary.....

good luck!

Had the Wild Country RVT traction (the really aggressive ones) tires on my truck when I bought it. They were the worst tires I have ever had the misfortune of having on my vehicle. I now have the Big O Big Foot AT's. I love them. I have put them through every kind of terrain here in the last few weeks hunting, and have only been able to have them loose traction once. That was when I was backing up and ended up planting my receiver hitch in the mud. They have been totally impressive over rock, dry dirt, mud , snow, you name it they work great. Not to mention they work great on the street.

I forgot about the Nitto All terrains. I have some on my wife's Expy and they are a very good tire. I got 4 of them mounted, balanced, valve stems, tax, and Discount tire road hazard free replacement certificates for $645. 285/75/16 was the size by the way.

I have a set of Super Swamper SSR's. Quiet on the highway, with the legendary Super Swamper TSL tread patern.

Really nice radials.

I have two sets of rims for my 84, the aluminum set with the ATs are on the truck right now. I am thinking about getting a set of 31x11.50 Super Swamper LTBs to mount on the steel whitespokes for off roading. They only go for 94 bucks a piece.

Yep I heard Intercos wear pretty good on the street even though they are made for mud and sand.
