I have been looking for a correct Ford clutch fan for awhile now to replace the Chevy clutch fan that required an adaptor to fit the 3/4" shaft. Anyone know what it would have been original to?
That is a centrifugal clutch, so it is aftermarket, all OEM clutches are Thermal. Not sure what the blade came from, but it's a typical configuration for any Ford that is the same diameter. The thing that varied was the length of the clutch shaft.
Christmas, Our trucks did not come with anything more than a 4 blade fan. Unless you are leaving the truck sitting still idling on a hot day, you need nothing more. When the truck is moving forward at 20 mph it does not need a fan at all. The reason is all the open air flow space. I have watched my temp gauge on a hot day in backed up town traffic. Sitting still it will go up, start moving and it goes right back down.
Please spend your money like you want, but fans is one way to waste it.

What your saying is true to a point, but don't forget some people live in the dessert. And some people put AC in their slicks. I intend to put AC in mine so I'll probably put a 6 blade ridged fan on my 300.
What John says about all of our trucks having 4 blade isn't correct. Many did, but not all. There were factory 5 blades and a dealer installed 6 blade.
My own truck with MX COM came with the 5 blade fan. This is the 912742 from the MPC entry above.
My 66 CS did come with the 912742., Then I added a shroud, that's where this journey started. The fan was so far forward it just created a lot of turbulence inside the shroud a no real movement to the rear at idle. The 6 blade clutch fan on there now requires an adaptor to fit and is PITA to get off and on. This new fan will eliminate the adaptor and move the fan back almost flush with the rear of the shroud. We'll see how it goes today.

According to Number Dummy the C6ME-A 7 blade clutch fan did come on the 68-72 F series, trucks did come with this fan. My wife just bought a new Retro 23' travel trailer that she expects me to tow around so I'm getting things in order to do so. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8466940

Darn, I thought this was the 61-66 forum.
Does not change what I said, as long as the truck is moving forward and not sitting idling, it does not need a fan at all.
and I think the model A came with a 2 blade IIRC LOL
When you start using parts that did not come from the factory on said car or truck you do what you have to do.
Did his truck ever come with a shroud? If so would it have been metal or plastic like he has?
I ask because on the 80-86 trucks with a 300 six, not sure on the v8's, only had a shroud if it had factory AC or HD cooling other wise it was a cover on the top of the radiator so you would not put your hand in the fan.

Whether you need a fan or not is a moot point I think. I have been thinking about going to a clutch style fan on my 64 because I am tired of the nonstop fan noise all the time. If someone could tell me what would work on a 64 with a 292 I would be grateful.

You can have the 6 blade clutch fan I just took off to give it a try, you just pay the shipping.
