This subject has been discussed ad infinitum ad nauseum. Sounds like the hard part has already been done. So the next question is, do you want an alternator that looks like a generator and fits in your original bracket, or do you want an alternator that looks like an alternator and requires a special bracket?
A lot of people use a GM 1 wire alternator. You can use an early Ford and keep an external regulator in place. Old MOPAR alternators look pretty good. You just need the right adapter bracket and wire according to the type you choose. Lots of options.
It is also possible to mount a GM alternator with a little modification using the stock generator mount. You can drill a locating hole in the GM alt that fits it in the dowel in the stock mount. You just have to get it in the right place, and revise the strap to fit around the larger alternator. The pulley from your generator will work on the GM alternator.
