The spec for the 2nd ring gap is 0.010 to 0.020. My new rings are measuring out at 0.022. Is this something to worry about? If so, Can I order the next size rings and file them down to spec? I'm currently .030 over so can I file .040 rings?
Thanks. John
I have a race motor with a very "special" block. When it needed new pistons my block machinist suggested ordering pistons only .005 larger in diameter than currently in there and using the next larger .010 ring pack, to save the bore iron for future bore jobs. He does it all the time on high dollar race motors.
No problems so far.
File fit rings are normally only .005" over, like FTF'S application would come out to be. I wouldn't be concerned with .022 gap if it's a performance engine, but if it's a stock type rebuild I'd want a little tighter.
RV cam 9.0 compression. EFI exhaust and offy intake. Went and bought a new set of feeler guages and using both sets, rechecked the gaps a little further down the cylinders. I'm at .024+ on five of them and .023 on the other. I will talk to machine shop this week but feel I'm too far out of spec for these. Also have a message left with the people at uem.
Thanks again everyone.
