So I have a 2019 that needs the unattended tail gate opening recall. Took it in and they couldn’t do it cuase the guy who usually works on Ford escort oil changes couldn’t print out the instructions to do the cutting and splicing.
been trying to get the recall print out do I could see how complex this is
in the meanwhile. Wife wanted to take the bikes to the park. Typical bike rack will cuase tail gate damage if the unattended tail gate opening occurs.
I installed a 1 Foot extension. So now if the tail gate opens...it won’t hit any thing.
I don't have the remote tailgate release, but must be very frustrating for the people that do. I can't imagine going down the highway with a non-command opening in the back of my mind all the time. I can't quite figure out why this option was developed except for an engineer to make a year end bonus. YMMV

My 2020 has remote tailgate release in the cab. It doesn't work. Never has. Not sure it's worth warrantying.
I agree. That's my point that the smart people at Ford can't figure out the fix for this. Where it's up to a customer to attach some kind of safety for their optional tailgate.
That's why I love my UnderCover bed cover. I've had mine release a couple of times, either on it's own or by my accidental button push when the remote is in my pocket. The bed cover keeps it from dropping open and it doesn't take much to push it closed when I notice it is opened. My truck is a '17, but I have found the tailgate unlatched more than once or twice and the bed cover kept if from dropping unexpectedly and losing anything that might have been in the bed.
can’t you just rig up a strap or chain on the inside of the tailgate to keep it from opening if the remote release accidentally opens it?
When I purchased my truck in February, the selling dealer informed me about the recall on the tailgate.
I was informed then, that the parts were already on order. It was completed in March.
I never had any unrequested drops before, or after the recall was completed.
I was concerned about it falling down onto the trailer tongue jack, and bending it up needlessly.
I decided to modify the boxlink bed anchor with a support cable bolt, by thinning one side, and mounting the support bolt through the hole closest to the tailgate.
Now when I connect the trailer, I just open the tailgate, remove the cable from the tailgate, and attach it to the post on the boxlink.
Had to thin boxlink bracket to mount cable support. Tailgate cable connected to support Tailgate will only open this far, so hopefully no damage to in the future!
Someone has to be close to making a removal kit. This is one of the features I wish wasn’t there, I’d remove in a heartbeat if there was a decent kit.
There is, XLT mod. In all seriousness, it can't be that hard to remove the electronic crap and put in a manual latch. The low trim levels still come with manual latches, the way a truck tail gate should be!
