I am trying to remove the caliper support key. It seems to be really rusted in--like a lot of things on this truck. Am I trying to move it in the right direction and hitting it in the correct spot? (see marked up photo) I am using a steel pipe as my "drift"
It'll go either way, and it has a spring leaf with it. It is not tapered nor is the slot. I use a long skinny pin punch, maybe 3/16" diameter, and with hammer, I gently knock it toward frame and it falls on the floor, then later when ready to reinstall, I insert it on the side nearest med as I'm seated on my shop stool, and move it towards the frame with a few taps until the retaining bolt half moon lines up with the threaded hole, insert bolt, done.
Put a screwdriver with a big head or a chisel that lines up with the key and give it some careful whacks with that. I believe going in the outward direction is the correct way, but you might give it a hit or two going inward to help break it free.

Yep it will go either way but I do it just like you do.

When you put back together, clean rust from sliding surfaces with wire wheel or file, coat surfaces with Permatex #80078 anti-seize lubricant or equivalent.
a good place for an air hammer! if you don't have one, get your biggest punch and biggest hammer and hit right on the star in your picture as squarely as possible to get it broken loose. if that doesn't work, then a little persuasion from some heat may be needed as other have recommended.
