What are you guys using for transfer case oil? This is for the BW 1356 in my ‘94. Ford original spec was for Mercon, and while Mercon V replaced it and is what should be used in transmissions, apparently it is not to be used in transfer cases. What gives?
They’re getting kinda carried away with the right and wrong oils to use in transmissions and transfer cases, they even contradict themselves on the bottles, I was able to find a bottle of DEXRON iii/Mercon from an old failed project and used that to get my new project about 10 miles to my house...maybe I need to drain it ASAP
It's confusing me sometimes what Ford does. The Dexron/Mercon might be totally fine to use. So the Motorcraft bottle of Mercon V says not to use in transfer cases while the bottles I have of Supertech Mercon V and Valvoline Mercon V has no mention of not using in transfer cases. Maybe it doesn't matter.
Take a look at the Motorcraft bottle, 3rd bullet down:
FWIW, I use John Deere Hygard j20c hydraulic fluid. I recently opened up the transfer case of my late son's '95 f150 to seal the halves and it looked almost spotless inside.
Below is a video about Mercon V in transfer cases. Ford XL-12 Transfer Case Fluid is now recommended in transfer cases where MERCON ATF was previously recommended.

I just drained my Tx case and read your post. Good catch.

Thanks guys. I ended up using Valvoline Full Synthetic Transfer Case Fluid that calls for Ford XL-12. Also as linked above, Mercon LV is now to be used as XL-12 no longer exists.
In summary, our trucks use Mercon V in the automatic transmissions and spec XL-12 or Mercon LV in the transfer cases.
