61 econoline van door lock help

Does anybody know where I can find a diagram of how the door locks work on the side and back doors of my 61 econoline van? I can’t find a diagram anywhere, and I have no idea how to make my van lock. I’ve already spent tons of money on locks and levers and retainers, I’m still missing the springs, but have no idea how to assemble the locks and levers and springs to each other, let alone cause them to act on the door latch mechanism.

google has been no help to me.

Thank you,
Azad

I have a '65 I can certainly take some photos of the lock mechanisms. I've replaced lock cylinders because mine is an 8-door and there were no fewer than four keys for them... and I mean four different locks PLUS the ignition and glovebox locks. Again, I'd be happy to snap some photos if they will help.

That would be SO RAD. I am having a hell of a time figuring out what I'm missing, and how to install all these parts I've bought off ebay. Thanks a million in advance.

Okay, I tried to get the best look at the driver door latch/lock mechanism that I could and the same for the double door latch mechanisms at the mid-line of each door. If there is anything else you need specifically, let me know and I'll try to get it.

double door mechanism (right-hand door with the exterior handle)

Another angle on the previous location

double door mid-line mechanism appearance with the interior handle in it normal position when the door is closed but NOT latched top and bottom.

double door mid-line mechanism appearance with the interior handle in the full release position to open the door with the exterior handle.

double door mid-line mechanism appearance with the interior handle in it normal position when the door is closed but LATCHED top and bottom.

double door mechanism for the door WITHOUT the exterior handle

another angle for the previous. Door handle in LATCHED position

another angle for the previous. Door handle in closed but NOT latched position

Driver door interior handle spring. The interior handle mounts to the other end of the shaft seen as a brass colored button at the center of the spring housing here. The arm extending down and right is the link back to the latch release mechanism.

Driver door latch mechanism actuated (exterior button depressed).

Driver door latch mechanism NOT actuated (exterior button released).

Driver door latch cog-wheel (in jamb at aft end of door)

Driver door latch with interior door handle in normal position (door closed and latched).

Driver door latch with interior door handle actuated (door opened and unlatched). Note the tapered arm near the top of the mechanism drops down closer to the latch wheel when the interior handle is actuated.

Thanks a ton. I really appreciate you taking the time to take those photos for me.

It seems that my biggest question perhaps can’t be answered with photographs. This question relates only to double doors.

On the back of the lock cylinder there must be some kind of little piece called the lever, or so I believe. My van has latching mechanisms in the double doors, but no lock cylinders or anything that would mount to them.

I purchased lock cylinders, and then, at the instruction of the ebay seller, I purchased lock levers and springs and retainers. Apparently the springs are for attaching the levers to the cylinders. I now have these parts, but I don’t know in what orientation the levers should be mounted on the lock cylinders (there seem to be two options) and how the lever interacts with the latch. Is there some kind of link rod between the two, or the does the lever just move up and interfere with the latch mechanism when the door is locked?

I can’t see the back of the lock cylinders with the mounted levers in any of your photographs.

Thanks a ton. This information is really not very available out there. I wouldn't even know where to find another first gen econoline to look at.

Okay, I think I can still help. I had all the levers with my old lock cylinders. They don't actually connect with anything inside the doors. The just touch/intersect the path of the latch mechanism which actuates the lock. Mine are all installed right now and I don't honestly recall the orientation of the levers but I can pull one and see how it is oriented, snap a photo and send it along.

This is the front door, but shows the back side of the door locks, which are similar on the side and rear doors.

Wow! Thank you. I was googling like crazy, and could not find those exploded views.

Even if I start out at econolines.org, i can’t figure out how to navigate to those pages.

That part of econoline.org is still under construction. In the mean time you can go here and access most of the drawings. Econoline Drawings

So I’m still having trouble. The drawings indicate to me that of the two options, one is the correct way to mount the levers behind the locks. I can do that, i can fish the lock through the hole, and I can hold it in place with the retainer.

When I insert and turn the key however, it doesn’t do anything as far as locking or unlocking the door. Also, when i turn the key it turns the lever up or down, but the key and lever must always return to the neutral position before I can remove the key. I have tried the lock in my side doors, which have a handle and button/rod inside and my back doors which have a handle outside only, and I cant get either one to lock, although the latching mechanisms work fine on both.

Any tips or insights? Am I still missing parts?

This is the correct orientation, right?

Hi Azad Lost,
Where did you order the rear door lock levers? I'm dealing with the same issues. I'm over on the Vintage Vans site detailing my entire story. I hope you solved your problem.

This is great info. I'm in the process of helping my buddy get his '63 Club Wagon roadworthy again. The door locks are a minor problem compared to other things we've found broken, but it's one of many that need to be repaired before it's trusted to be out of eyesight. Thanks again.
