Correct fluid for trans

What is the correct weight gear oil for a 1987 F150 4-speed? 85W-90 or 85W-140? Owners manual just says gear oil but the auto parts store has multiple weights

i usually use 85-140 in transmissions that use gear oil. but being in Idaho, you probably will not see any issues using the 85-90

That’s odd. My ‘87 owner’s manual also has the Ford part number D

Z-19C547-A and Ford specification ESP-M2C83-C. You could look on the oil container to see if it meets the specs. Here are old threads on the topic:

I am also on a Jeep forum. They said that NAPA usually has GL-4 gear oil in stock which is apparently very hard to find as most are GL-5.
