I found this featured product in my Goodguy's email this week and thought I'd share. It seems to be a viable option for those who would like to (or need to, given some of our advanced ages) upgrade to power steering without fussing with pumps, brackets, extra pulley sheaves and plumbing. This electric system fits right in line with the steering column. Sure, it would take some work and engineering, and it's not cheap, but compared to the alternative, it may not be so bad.
Are you tired of wrestling the steering wheel while navigating the fairgrounds or trying to get around that tight corner? If so, then you're in luck as Flaming River is now offering their Microsteer universal Electric Power Assisted Steering system. It can be easily fitted to virtually any vehicle, without the need to change steering rack or fit a hydraulic system where manual steering currently exists.
The unique Microsteer Tuning Box allows you to adjust the amount of assistance by using a rotary potentiometer or, if you prefer, you can make the system speed sensitive by connecting a wheel speed signal to the Tuning Box.
Yes EPAs is the way forward for conversions. Some make their own with readily available Toyota boxes and there is other companies like EPAS Performance or Steerman Cycles.
If your not opposed to a power steering rack look at installing a pump out of a early 2000 Volvo like a s40. It is an electric hydraulic pump. No need for pulleys or belts. Wire it up.
If you want to go with a hydro system, i strongly recommend you consider the Volvo S40 electric pump. These cars are plentiful in junkyards now and this stand alone pump can easily bolt to the frame rail and only needs a 3 wire connection. Only downside is they do pull about 70 amps. These are used a lot by the guys doing Coyote V8 swaps. The pump even says "FoMoCo" on it!
