I just bought a 2003 f150 king ranch 225k miles but runs extremely smooth, on cold start up I have a noise I cant figure out. It does not do it at idle, when cold it is only noticeable at slight off idle to 2-2500 rpm. At those rpms it just disappears (like a switch has flipped it off)untill I sit at a light for a few or after being in drive-through. After the truck is nice and warm I dont notice it at all unless i turn it off and it sets for about 10-15 minutes.
You probably have a broken manifold stud.. Once the manifold expands from heat the noise will sometimes go away. There was also a tsb for diesel type sound at idle that is just noise from the light off inside the cat convertor.

I thought about that but cant figure out why it drastically goes away between 2 and 2500 rpm depending on the temp
You could have the cat rattle that Ford fixed with a band rap (Think of a very big water hose clamp) clamped around in two places on the cat.
I think they wanted around $600.00 to fix it that way for one cat. What you are saying kind of sounds like it.
According to the TSB it says at idle, I dont get the noise at idle its from just slightly off idle to 2-2500rpm i could try to put something on it to make sure.
