Welcome to FTE nybyrne,
I've seen this same question posed on several thread before yours in the section that you are in. Do some exploration into them. You may find the info herein helpful to other problems that may arrise and maybe also help a friend! Also acquire a repair manual, it does help in these matters.

Take a look under the dash, there should be a ground screw somewhere near the steering column. Make sure it's tight. Like Wolfen sez a manual would be a big help. www.helminc.com will have the XLNT "Electrical & vacuum trouble-shooting manual" It has saved me way more than the 30 bucks I paid for it.
