‘94 Explorer 4.0 Auto engine ticking

I have a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT with the 4.0 and automatic, it’s been in the family for a long time (10+ years) and it’s always had this ticking from the engine. It’s random, like it goes in and out of doing it, like a couple seconds it won’t do it and maybe a couple seconds where it sounds like 2 or 3 ticks at the same time. It’s got new oil (10w30), and the oil pressure is getting a little low because it’s getting old, and the ticking doesn’t get any louder or quieter as it warms up.

How many miles does your Explorer have?
Could be a sticky lifter. How do you know you have low oil pressure? The stock gauge only tells you that you have some oil pressure, doesn't tell you how much.

its got around the range of 250,000 miles, and the oil pressure gauge is at the “O” or NORMAL. Unsure of the actual PSI

I have the same engine in my Explorer, but with fewer miles.
If you suspect sticky lifters, something like marvel mystery oil may help. I'd say it's worth a try.

Just wanted to add,
As far as oil pressure go's, the oil light will come on if it drops to a certain amount of oil psi. I've seen a number like 5psi I believe thrown around the internet but don't know for sure.
You would need to hook up a true oil pressure gauge to get some real numbers.
At 250,000 miles it probably did drop some over the years.

Yeah, the 4.0 is the o my engine available in the first gen, also I’ve put numerous amounts of Seafoam in there with no difference. I’ve heard that there’s a flap in the intake that can become loose and do this, but I saw it on a newer SOHC 4.0 with a plastic intake, probably with the low end torque and high end power flap in the manifold. Every once in a while the “check oil” light will go on, but if I shut it off and check the oil, which is fine, the light goes away. Should I pull the valve covers and check for play in any of the lifters?

Your oil light should never go on. The oil pressure has to drop pretty low for the light to go on. You could have a bad oil sending unit. I would change it, there not that expensive and easy to change.
The valve covers are your call, you may or may not see anything wrong. I guess it depends on how bad it's ticking.
If you do take them off I would try to find out where the tick is coming from. While running try pulling a plug wire one at a time and see if the ticking noise changes, maybe you can narrow it down to which one/ones are ticking.
Good Luck!
