(Didn't know what forum to put this in; move it if you like)
My cabin (1995 E350 cutaway) has become REALLY loud. I think one problem is the fiberglass insulation surrounding the engine is falling out. Another is I have some of the panels off in the cab. Whatever the reason I drive with earphones on which isn't ideal.
It was never what anyone would deem quiet, but it's a bit ridiculous now. Does anyone have suggestions regarding sound insulation? Thanks!
It's just the regular 7.3 engine noise but with hardly any barrier. No rattling or anything. It doesn't sound in any way unusual, just loud.
(If the engine was contacting the firewall I'd know, and it would be impossible to remove valve covers)
There's a small leak yes due to those stupid ceramic seals. I'm replacing them with stainless and wrapping them. I suppose the leak could have gotten worse.
Thing is the cabin was never really quiet so even if I got it to where it was before I'd want to dampen it to at least the point I can listen to the stereo.
If you don’t get bellowed up pipes they will leak again without going very long. Riffraffs set is well proven. I’m curious tho is all the tin metal behind the motor on the firewall still? I’m assuming you checked that already. Other than exhaust leaks I’m not sure what else it would be. Maybe the carpet being torn up in the cab. Not sure how much difference that would make tho
FWIW tho I’m fairly certain the obs 7.3s are never exactly a quiet cab. Some people take up all the carpet and everything and do sound boards not really sure how that has worked out but I guarantee it helps
Hmm gotcha. Sorry forgot that from the op. I’m sure the up pipes leaking are making some noise. If there’s no insulation on the firewall it’s gonna be loud. Never seen one in person tho. Is there any way you could safely stuff something back there? Just something mostly heat proof that might have a 1/4 inch pad or just something to dampen it
I had the doghouse off yesterday to fid a fuel leak and had the engine running. It didn't sound any different, at least not dramatically so.
The only material I can think of other than old school fiberglass insulation is (rather spendy) Thermo-tec but I have no idea if either has any effect on sound.
