Trailer Brake Wiring

Hey guys, now that I finally figured out all my mechanical problems I'm going to try wiring up for trailer lights once more. I have the brake controller with the pigtail to the plug under the center of the dash along with the Curt 4 pin plug at the rear. I noticed there are 2 other connectors at the back of the truck just hanging there and was wondering if these are plugs to wire the rest of the 7 pin connectors too? Also, what relays and fuses should I look for in the fuse panels? I plan on towing a 20ft enclosed trailer up north and next year a 30ft gooseneck car trailer so I want to have functional trailer brakes for both of those adventures.

What color are the wires?

IIRC, the brake signal wire is blue.

The other one is possibly the hot / power lead which usually terminates up in the engine bay near the PCM / close to the power distribution block. Seem to recall that this one is orange. Your choice on wiring this as always hot or key hot if it is not already wired into the distribution block.

Might consider running a new power lead anyway as the OE gauge is usually too small to do any significant charging of the trailer's battery.

For any new fuses, the controller's manual should indicate what to use, especially breakers. I forget the breaker sizes, but do remember that it depends on the number of brakes.

For the brake and turn light wires, should not need any new fuses as they will leverage the same fuse as the truck's equivalent.

Only new potential fuses that I remember are the one for the brake controller and the hot lead. The controller should have an inline fuse. For the hot lead, that might depend on how much power you want to allow, but the manual calls for a 30 Amp.(in location #18); so that will also mean a 30 Amp relay (if necessary).

Thumbs up

When I repaired all my stuff, there was a grey and black I think in the *** end totaling seven wires. Luckily, I was able to produce the OE harness ends from two junkyard trucks and install that into an aftermarket Curt seven pin plug.

I can send you the schematic from the EVTM for the tow wiring and the fuse boxes, just PM me with your number.

Thanks for the help, I'll definitely do that. I read in my owner's manual in the fuses section and all the required fuses and relays are there, I also found these 2 connectors under the *** end and I am pretty confident they are the OEM connectors. So the questions is, where do I find a 7 blade end that is plug and play with the oem connectors? I attached pictures for reference.

According to etrailer, the remaining wires need hard-wiring, but I'd look for a connector like Hit Man X did. From the photo, it looks like the bundle of 3 wires on the left are the brake signal, hot lead, and (probably) the backup lights.

FWIW, if not already part of the plan, might consider wiring the backup lights as well even if the current trailers do not have them. Reason for this is that over time I got a TT which does have reverse lights and they do help.

AH - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post18557116 Look by my hitch, you can see the harnesses. You could always just remove the OE stuff, install a Weatherpack connector and wire up whatever you want. That is not how I like stuff unless makes sense.

I know the Ford OE seven pin was available new when I looked a bit back. It came up for a Bronco I think. Probably will have an F2TE or F4TE prefix.
