Well I got my beast of a truck running last weekend but I can't get it to run right unless the choke is on. The truck sat for seven years without running or moving so I rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel filters unhooked the fuel line from the tank and put a fuel line going into a gas can with clean gas. I also replaced the plugs and wires and condensor and points. The motor is a 360 or 390, I haven't figured that out yet. I can get it to run good with the choke on but as soon as I open the choke and hit the gas it wants to die like it is starving for gas or something. I replaced the gasket underneath the carb with a thinner one, would that have anything to with it? I'm stumped here, if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it!
Is the accelerator pump arm hooked up right? Will the engine rev up if you push the gas real slow or is there nothing besides idle? The thinner gasket won't casue this but the thicker one will keep the carb cooler. Not a big deal though.
The pump arm only hooks up one way , right? It will rev up if I go really slow but not if I try to rev it quick. When the choke is closed I can rev it fast without a problem I'll put the thicker gasket on it to because it doesn't like to start to well after it's been running for a while.
I'm going to take a stab here and ask if the air/fuel mix needles were reset once you put the carb back together. Of course I am refering to the screws in the front of the carb at the base which should be lightly set all the way in and then backed out 1 1/2 turns....

Yes, I adjusted them when I put the carb back on.....I'm really stumped on this one! I've never ran into a problem like this one before, I've done everything I can think of! Any other ideas?!!!
Seems like the source is actually too much air getting into the mix, this because it runs well when choked. Maybe a leak around your new thinner base plate?
I decided I'm going to junk the carburator and buy a new one for $109. I can't figure this one out. I messed around with it again last night and can't figure it out. I think I want to put a manual choke on it also because the electric one doesn't work, although the new carb will probably come with one.
I would check for a vacuum leak around the base first. A new carb will not fix the leak. If it is that autolite 2100 or 2150 carb they last pretty much forever. I would use the money to buy a pertronix or another upgrade.
I replaced both gaskets last night. I put one under that spacer and put on the thicker gasket and checked for leaks but did not find any. The carb that I have on it now is not the orginal one. It is a motorcraft model 2150 I believe. I might even just put a 4 barrel on it. I have to take off the intake and replace the gasket anyway so I'm thinking I might just get an edelbrock performer intake and carb.
Nope, just an oil leak. Your actual intake gaskets could be leaking and that would cause you to burn oil as well as run horrible. You can't go wrong with a small 4bbl and an aluminum intake!
