Exhaust Brake

I'm replacing my exhaust and thought that this would be the time to add a brake. I have heard about the SP brake that is electrically controlled, but they are out of business. Are there any other options for an electric controlled exhaust brake??
As far as the air controlled ones, I'm leaning toward the PacBrake

There's this one.

If you have your factory EBPV, you can modify it to function as an exhaust brake of sorts.

If you have factory valve springs, beware of running too much back pressure and floating valves.

In 2000 I installed the electronics called powerbraker. It allowed me to use the factory plumping as an exhaust brake. For short stops its useless, However on long grades if you down shift to get up around 2000rpm or higher it is a game changer...especially in the rocky's. At that time my trailer was @ 8000lbs. Cheers.

I had looked and found this: https://www.bankspowerproducts.com/B...ke-p/55207.htm

I cannot comment as to how well it works, however. I am pretty far from installing it.

As Leonard mentioned above, if you still have the OEM EBPV it can be used as an exhaust brake. Like Andy said it works best above 2k RPM.

In my case I have a old school DP tuner, one of the tunes being exhaust brake. Activates the valve and firms up the trans to transmit the engine braking to the wheels. Very effective on a long down grade when towing. The cost of a DP tuner is waayy less than the hardware versions above. Plus you get other tunes like hi idle, tow tune, daily drive tune, race tune, etc.

It is possible to kluge together an exhaust brake with not much money and some fab skills. Gets a bit complex if you want the trans to be part of the dance. I just went the easy way.

For any off the shelf systems check if it does anything to trans tuning. That needs to be part of it for best efficacy.

EBPV = Exhaust Back Pressure Valve

It is factory equipment Ford put on the 7.3. You should still have it if your truck is stock. I will post up the full description from the shop manual when I get back to my PC.

Edit: Added the sections of the shop manual that describe the EBPV. The Description and Operation section makes only passing mention of it. The Removal and Installation section gives you a good idea where it is.. Tagging @Y2KW57 for Tech Folder content. (Done)

OT: @264WSM What rifle are you shooting that out of? I prefer 6.5CM myself. Let the caliber wars begin!!

I built it on a Savage 10 with a PacNor barrel. Not a CM fan as I have 3 260s and a 260 Ackley Improved in the works.

WOW! Those images look overly complicated. My plan is to replace the exhaust from the turbo back. If I do this, will that eliminate the EBPV? I have had a high back pressure code cleared out of my truck. I don't know how old it was. I am experiencing high EGTs now.

I too got a DP tuner, mainly for hauling my 13,000# plus 5th wheel in the Sierra Nevadas. As stated, the exhaust brake tune is a game changer going down some of the 6% and 7% grades.

If I get a Diamond Eye turbo back exhaust - does it eliminate this valve (EBPV)?? The DP Tune looks pretty good, even if I have a ZF6.

No. The backpressure valve is part of the turbine outlet which is not removed/replaced with the exhaust pipe.

I would change the last sentence to "ESPECIALLY since it has a manual transmission".

Tap the EBPV. It's damn near free, and works very well.

Did it on my truck years ago, and I use it daily.

I just remembered. I have a homebrew EBPV as exhaust brake controller that takes care of TC lockup (assuming you have a 4R100) and activates with the brake pedal. I took it out when I got my DP Tuner with Decel tune. You can have it for the price of postage from MN.
