2wd steering rack? Issue
I'm more well versed person on the older trucks and cars. Or tractors. Or big equipment Or saws. Or.......I Have a few posts in both the 66 and 79 model year forums. I do have two car shop I use for tinkering. Pretty much any tool and a 4 post lift. I'm a ford guy but known to work on or drive anything. I have 3 Mustangs (86,93 and 04) and 3 ford trucks. (66,79, and 04 f350). I'm not a member of any other car forums and have little free time for forums nor any real knowledge to offer if I were. If you break a gun or husky or stihl I'm here for you. Lol
My question is about my daily driver. An 03 mustang gt with 125k. I was wondering if the 2wd truck had the same steering system or if anyone had any other input. I do have a junk 4.6 f150 2wd that is handy and I seem to remember it's the same or similar.
My issue is after a 30 minute drive I shut the car off today. When I got back in it I have next to no power steering to the right. To the left I'm still good. I raised the car off the ground and the issue is the same. Turns fine left. Hard right. I can manually turn the tires and they turn free until I get the slack out of the steering (1/8 inch maybe but tells me everything is free) then it's the same. When I'm pushing the rack in its stiff to the right. Not the left. Ball joints are newish moog. Fluid is full. No bubbles. No leaks. All original parts in the steering system. No binding or anything at the borgsen joint. I had 5 minutes to diagnose and a 3 year old to turn the wheel for me..... that's the best I could do. Lol
I assume it's the steering rack. Maybe a valve issue. I will just buy a new one and change it if that's the case. I don't see how it would be much else Just wondering if anyone had any other ideas or checks to do first. Pump looks like it would be the bigger PIA to change and I don't figure it would work left if the pump were bad. Any input?
