I have a 2004 Excursion 6.0. Recently on a trip there was a pop/bang noise and then a lot of noise when I was pulling power. Its like a wooshing air noise. It is louder the more I press the accelerator as well as louder when more power (as in uphill) is needed, but completely normal when coasting. The sound is coming from the drivers side dash area when I sit in the driver's seat, but the driver's firewall when I am under the hood. I've looked at everything accessible but no luck with finding a broken anything.
I've read about the heater core being low and causing a noise. I checked the coolant, did add some, and parked it with the nose up for a bit. Didn't help.
I believe it is pre turbo as the performance is not any different, its just very loud. Before I start removing things (like coolant reservoir) to get in further, any suggestions or thoughts? I feel like this should be an easy thing to spot but I just can not find it. Help!
Have you checked all cac tubes and up pipes to turbo? Maybe look at your air cooler. Do you have anything to monitor and read codes on your truck? Any codes?
^ CAC tubes was also what I would suggest you check. At some point they switched to plastic tubing (not sure why) which is prone to tears/breaks over time, and when they go they can scare the crap out of you with a loud bang. If cracked, it might not open up until your CAC tube is under pressure which could be the reason why you dont hear it when you coast.
Not throwing codes - forgot to mention that one. Since it wasn't throwing any codes, I drove it 500 miles home. Only difference was the noise.
The CAC tubes have been replaced with metal tubes. There is a little oil residue on the rubber boot on the top front of the engine for the pipe that goes down next to the air filter. I will look at that first to see if I can see any failures since it's right there.
Beyond that, I think I'll have to get into it. My guess is the up pipe on the driver's side firewall from the noise I hear since you don't have any other revelations. Just wanted to ask everyone in case there's a "well duh" thing that happens that I couldn't find. Thank you both for the help and I'll report back when I figure it out!
You possibly blew an end tank o-ring on your intercooler. I had that happen and all seemed normal, at first, just the noise when pulling harder. The seal finally blew completely about 2 weeks later.
