Temp gauge issues (no reset?)

I have a 94 4.9 EFI f150 4x4 manual transmission. When I start the truck cold the temp gauge never resets back to "zero", but instead measures as of it's already zeroed even if it's halfway up the gauge.. so it'll go from the R in normal all the way up near hot.. BUT after some driving (10-15min) it finally works itself out and drops back down to the O or R. I recently replaced the actual gauge sensor in the block when I did a head replacement (the old one had issues) and it was working for a couple months then started acting up. I've tried cleaning the connections on the connector->sensor... Is there any other thing I can diagnose to pinpoint the issue? Is it some kind of grounding issue? All other gauges on dash work fine.

Use Motorcraft sensor, and small amount of teflon paste rather than large amounts of tape.

Clean threads in manifold well. These electronics (gauges) don't cycle like newer vehicles.

You can test resistance of senders by controlled application of heat & measure response.

Did all that when installed a new motorcraft sensor... Not sure what else to do now.

Well then if it does go to hot & then back down consistently, you have to figure it's doing it's job & the issue is a slow response or sticking thermostat.

If you ground the connector for the sender with the key @ on & the gauge pegs, everything is doing what it should.
