I guess i'm a bit old school, but is there a way to arbitrarily disable the backup camera? Say some option for the camera switch?? I do use it sometimes for connecting to ball hitch, but more often than not, at night, its annoying as hell. The damn screen is too bright and over powering to see mirrors! Annoying AF...
I argued a bit with Ford corporate about this to no avail. They told me the backup camera law requires the camera to be on while the vehicle is in reverse. I sent them the text of the law which I interpret as; the camera must activate when the vehicle is shifted into reverse but it can then be turned off by the driver before actually moving in the reverse direction. They didn’t see it that way. My guess is, it’s a lawyer thing where nobody wants to have to answer why they’d build in a way to bypass a federally mandated safety device. Even if the bypass is specifically allowed by the law! You read it and see how you interpret it!
REQUIREMENT:
The rearview image meeting the requirements of S5.5.1 and S5.5.2 (S6.2.1 and S6.2.2) shall remain visible during the backing event until either:
• the driver modifies the view, or
• the vehicle direction selector is removed from the reverse position.
This test is conducted to verify that once the backing event is initiated (transmission selector into reverse gear), the rearview image cannot be extinguished by any means other than driver intervention which would include the vehicle direction selector being removed from the reverse position. Rearview image must extinguish by end of backing event.
I suppose if one was handy, one could potentially wire an upfitter switch to turn on/off the backlight for the LCD. Or maybe a relay connected to headlight circuit. I haven't yet poked around enough yet to know if backlight is a separate wire or is part of an on-board connection. If so you'd have to be really handy, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
