My wifes 2000 PSD Excursions Service Engine Light has come on and gone off twice. The first time it stayed on for a while and then went off. We took it to the dealership where they could not find a hard code and said that the engine may have been recalibrating.
Yesterday the same thing occurred, the service engine soon light came on and went off about and hour or so later. I could not feel any performance differences, but the dealer said they can't get a code unless the light is on.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it something to worry about that could affect the engine or driveability of the truck?
Even if the light goes off there should be a code stored. The only thing I can think of is the cam position sensor may be going out, sometimes they don't trigger a code. Other than that I'm stumped.
Here's my experience with the service engine light. Driving along truck cut out pulling up to a stop sign, light came on,started right up. Drove a little farther light came on again. This time I stopped and checked under the hood, everything was OK. Drained the fuel filter water separator, couldn't think of anything else to try. NO, the water in fuel light NEVER came on. Truck ran great with no more problems since..
Read the owners manual when I got home and it says "poor fuel quality or water in the fuel" will make the light come on and off. I know this sounds strange and even I thought that the water in fuel light should have come on, not the service engine soon light.
I've drained the water separator a couple more times, just to be sure. Run the truck almost empty and filled back up with hopefully "good" fuel. Truck's been running great after a 1000 miles, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
