Should I change out the timing chain when i install an LKQ 4.6L engine?

Got a rod knocking on my 1997 F150 after 273,000 miles, so I ordered another motor from LKQ. It is a 4.6L with a 6 as the 8th letter engine code. The replacement engine has only 113k miles on it, and i am debating whether or not to buy a timing set and replace the chain and tensioners before installing the replacement.

I have never had a minutes problem with the old engine's tensioner or chain, and really don't want to open the replacement engine up and risk creating an oil leak unless it is necessary.

How long do the 4.6L chain and tensioners normally last?? Thanks in advance.

Depends on many factors. Previous maintenance, How heavy a foot the previous owner had. I've run those up to 300k Personally I'd change it out.

My 2005 Aviator with the 4.6 DOHC dropped one tensioner at about 140K. Screwed the engine up to the point I had to replace it. The replacement is a 2004 DOHC. I made sure to replace the tensioners, chains, oil pump, plugs etc before putting it in. That engine was certified and had 84K on it. Best to spend the money now with the engine out than spend the money on it later where it's going to cost more.

Never done a timing job on any engine but I would say that it’ll be easier to do with the engine out wouldn’t it? Might want to do the rear main seal and oil pan gasket at the very least as those are generally cheap enough to do since the engine is already pulled
