Not knowing much about this motor i was just curious about reliability, etc. The truck has 147,000 miles. When i test drove it it seemed to run strong. the engine looks clean and does not leak or burn oil. How much more life can be expected from this engine? Thanks
well, engine life span is so unpredictable, 302 is a good motor, any motor can be a good motor(except a geo metro 3 cylinder), any motor can be a crappy motor(if abused), the point is taking care of an engine will encourage a good long life) ive seen a 302 with 247k miles on it and still ran good, ive seen a 302 with 77k that smoked and knocked. most likely the truck you got your eye on will probally last another good 100k or so, if taken care of, depending on its present condition.

Hi Tim,
I have that exact truck, a 1989 F-150 4x4 with a 302 and a automatic. It has 156k now. These trucks are pretty reliable. I am on my 3rd F-150, and none have ever left be beside the road. It's hard to say how the truck was taken care of, being 12 years old.

What I would do, is take it to a trusted mechanic and have him look it over well. It pays in the long run, they can tell you if the trucks in good condition. Like the above reply, they can last a very long time without a serious problem.
