Newbie-ish (to posting) here and thanks for a great forum. Tons of info on here...
I have a 1951 Ford F3 Parcel Delivery with a flathead 226 and 3 speed on the tree that I'm trying to put back together. With the vehicle came a spare 254 flathead and a crash box 4 speed (59T-7006). From what I've read the 3 speed would seems to be more ideal than the 4 speed, but was wondering if the 3 speed will bolt up to the 254 without any modification or changes in adapter plate? The truck came factory with the 226, but I figure if the 254 fits and the engine mounts are the same, why not get that extra little bit of power. I have had the head machined and ready to go, just hoping no issues with the 254 for this setup so as not to sink a whole lot of money in the engine to find out it won't work.
The engines interchange. I am not familiar enough with the parcel delivery to know if the wider 254 oil pan will be a problem. If you do need to change oil pans you should also change the oil pickup tube. Using the 226 head on the 254 would result in higher compression.
The 254 with 4-sp would have an 11" clutch. As far as I can tell the 226 and 254 use the same flywheel, so you could put the 226 flywheel with 10" clutch drilling on the 254. You can't use an 11" clutch with the LD 3-sp. (I guess you could if you used a 10" disc)
