Hi there i have a 1958 ford f100 the speedometer is not working the cable broke shortly after i bought the truck i replaced the cable and now the speedometer gear that goes on the end of the cable will not stay on the end of the cable and keeps falling into the transmission is there a reason for this as it did not do this when i bought the truck any help would be great thanks
Here are pics of t98 from f100 and dirty pic of three speed od.
I did not realize you could separate the part where the speedo gear goes in from the rest of the trans i also have a 3 speed manual trans in my f100 is there supposed to be a block that prevents the gear from falling in? if so is it possible that mine has lost that block?
Sorry the separate part is rear housing if four speed. I have not taken the three speed apart. Looks like cable is held by a bracket and bolt and gear housing unscrews.

the speedometer cable housing or at least the sleeve end has been changed on mine so there is no clip to hold the gear onto the cable any idea if the 3 speed has something that prevents the gear from falling into the extension?
here are some pictures. Shop manual for three speeds with and without overdrive and pics if the driven gear from an old three speed with overdrive. Can you see in the hole with driven dear removed? Maybe drive gear is worn or damaged? Completely different than my four speed. This three speed was attached to a 239 y-block so likely from a 1954 car so may not be the same.

with the gear removed you could look in if the trans is removed from the truck with it being under the truck not quite enough room to look in the speedo gear and sleeve end looks like the one in the pictures although my gear just sorta sits on the cable nothing holding onto the cable i have thought of gluing the gear onto the cable but would rather fix it right i will try and have a look to see if i can tell if the gear inside is worn

No idea. I only have the transmission by accident. It is nothing like the t98 in my truck.

Oh ok I will eventually have to take the transmission off the truck to get the speedo gears out again i hope this time will be the last time taking it off so far i have it off twice this will be my third time I believe seems like it has become a yearly thing
Not related to speedo but does anyone know anything about the horn button i cant seem to get mine to work right i put the top of the button on without turning it you hit a bump the wrong way the horn goes off if i tighten the top on by turning it like I believe you are supposed to do the horn sounds constant without even touching the button
Horn button completes a ground for horn relay. My horn wire has insulation peeling off and grounds circuit. My horn relay is bad too so horn doesn't honk but relay makes a nice clicking sound. Horn wire comes out of center of steering column. I think blue. Connects with butt connector to wire to relay. Something is grounding out on yours. Switch, wire, relay.
My horn did a similar thing. My steering wheel was old and cracked so I repaired it the best I could but the center section was out of round and shape. I tried everything- re-repaired the center section, used a dremmel to sand the high spots and surface smooth but the horn would still randomly sound. I bit the bullet and bought a new steering wheel and hey presto, problem solved. Also the horn button didn’t click into place correctly with the old wheel but the new wheel it clicked in first go and I haven’t had an issue with the horn since.
Original wheel center section cracked and repaired with “kneed it putty”
Painted after repair but horn still randomly sounds and wouldn't stop.
