So I got some bad news today. My transmission has been acting funny. Took the truck (2016 f-250) with 115,000 miles into ford to get looked at. I had been hoping it was the tcm. Turns out I need a new transmission. Truck has never been beaten on, it is a daily driver, hauls occasionally and tow my old rock crawler to the mountains. They said it looks like one of the gears lost a tooth and that are a bunch of other parts. Fluid was full of metal when they pulled the pan. Reason I took it in was it was shifting funny, skipping 4th after about 5 minutes of driving and some other occasional erratic shifting. Of note I just changed the fluids and filter at 105,000 miles. Now I have some things figure out. The truck was paid off and runs great. Better mpg would be nice, but it's not horrible. Plan is/was to keep this pick up for the foreseeable future. Initial ballpark figure is $8k, but will get the actual written estimate in the next couple days. I also had them put together a trade in value.
So, do I a) spend the money to fix at the dealership of another shop? b) something I can do myself in the driveway? I have no idea how involved this job would be, would this tranny drop out and new one goes in, or am I going to have to pull the motor? Only vehicle I've done something like this with are older trucks. Bronco, hot rods etc. Or c) do I look to trade in for a new f-250? I am about to look at the specs on some newer ones. 2019, 2020 (though most everything this year seems to be cursed) or a 2021. Looking for any and all input on this. Thanks in advance for comments ideas and suggestions.
Well it should be right around 5000.00 out the door. So where does the other 3k come from? They are way high on the estimate. Do yourself a favor and find another shop. https://streetsmarttransmission.com/...transmissions/

Haven't seen them before. They make good reliable products?
Dealership service departments don't repair transmissions anymore, they replace them.
Does your transmission need replacement? A good transmission repair shop could tell you. Might be worth a few phone calls to find out.
according to Ford it needs to be replaced. They tech said it appears one of the gears lost a tooth and chewed up a bunch of internals. I looked around last night and everything I am seeing for sale is between 5 and 7k. Going to call around to some different shops and get quotes.

Have you thought about a salvage transmission. Go to car-part.com enter you truck info and your state or zip and could find a tranny in you area. Look for tranny that matches your truck. Some would even have low mileage. Some salvage yards offer from 90 day up to 1 yr 12k mile warranty. Ive had pretty good success on big ticket items. Like engine or rear axles. Salvage tranny 1500-2500 depending on mileage and condition + labor. If truck runs good and PAID for. 5000$ or so is a lot cheaper than 50-60k for new one. Just a thought.
Is your truck 2wd or 4wd. Part and labor cost factor there also. One poster said they don’t break that often. 2nd opinion never hurt.
New trans vs reman or salvage.... your truck is a 2016 and NADA said it worth let’s say $25000. You put in a New trans spend $7-8000 it’s still worth $25000 on a trad-in. I would find the best cheapest option. Save what you can. You said you’ve worked on cars and truck. Invest in chilton repair man or look up on YouTube how to replace trans in your truck. Not likely a 1 man job in driveway. Will need lift for sure. Just my .02
There's got to be a reputable shop near you that would r&r a used transmission for way under the stealership quote. That would be the route I would go. I second the idea to look at car-part.com for a low mileage unit.
