My windshield cracked today. It had been parked for about an hour (facing the Florida sun). It was fine when I parked. The crack is in front of the rear view mirror and is already 10 inches long. I've heard these windshields are prone to cracks but was shocked to think it happened out of the blue. I sure don't recall anything hitting it. My insurance covers it. Is this a situation where aftermarket may be better than OEM?
Gorilla gas is pretty expensive....i thought I saw it was 800.00 and ordered through Ford?...My insureance replaces my windshields for free as part of my policy. I usually do 1 a year. Just replaced my windshied after 6 months from the previous change out.
There is also a plastic film to be applied...the estimate I got was 400.00...tempted but for free replacements I beeter just go with plain old gas
If the crack did not originate from damage or impact, should the warranty cover the cracked glass? Are you still within the warranty period?
The truck was bought new in Sept 2019. It has 14,000 miles. In Florida, it's so easy to have insurance cover the replacement that it isn't worth even asking for warranty coverage. If I were a service writer at the dealer, I would deny coverage because you can't prove it wasn't damaged. I just wonder if standard aftermarket parts are an improvement over OEM.
At this point, it's bad enough that it's getting replaced either way..... I hate to break a good seal and risk another water leak. Whatever, they're made to use so bumps and scuffs are gonna happen.
I’ve had several windshields crack due apparently to significant temperature changes, both hot and cold. All have started as some sort of prior damage. Various chips, stars from debris being kicked up. Some of the chips barely visible, then next morning or that afternoon, crack across the whole windshield.
There’s no hiding a ten inch crack in a windshield.
No but I had a couple that hit up top out of sight and they cracked a little later. If you notice it, even a short crack get it filled real quick and keep on trucking.

Speaking from experience.
Yep, agree. Don't put it off. But sometimes, it just can't be helped.
I had one years ago with my 1999 F250 SD. Heading home from work one evening from Berthoud, CO to Windsor, CO in November. About 10F degrees on the way home, got a rock chip on I-25. Small, just a bit larger than a BB, about 3" up from the bottom edge of the windshield, couple inches right of center. Got home about 6pm. No place open to get it repaired then, figured I would get it taken care of next day. Got down to about -15F overnight. Got up the next morning and had a crack horizontal running edge to edge from 2" - 6" above the bottom.
