Adjustable Clutch?!

I am trying to replace the clutch in my 87 Ranger. I fact I have tried three times an it is doing the same thing over and over. It slips when the clutch is engaged. It just feels like there is an adjustment that needs to be made to the hydraulic part of the system. If anyone has any ideas please fill me in. I just dont know where and how this adjustment can be made. Thank You

Hydraulic clutches generally aren't adjustable. If your clutch is slipping, it probably needs to be replaced. If you've done that, and it's still slipping, then you have something else going on. Do you have a concentric slave cylinder, or is it external? You might try bleeding the system, if that's possible. On some trucks, it's not possible to bleed the system, though.

Another possibility is if the rear main seal is leaking oil, you can be getting oil on the clutch plate. This will obviously cause slippage. I think you'd know if that was the problem, though. Your bellhousing would have oil in it.

How many miles? What engine? What transmission? More details are always helpful..

Oh, and welcome to FTE!

thank you for replying. The slave cylinder is concevtric. And we bled the system after it was installed. Yes the main seal is leaking, but would that cause it to slip right after the clutch was installed? By right after, I mean within two hours of the instalation
The truck has about 200,00 miles on it with a 2.9L, V-6 engine. I think that it has the mitsubishi trans. in it, but I am not sure.

Sure it would. The clutch depends on friction to engage the flywheel. What happens if you get even a little oil on the clutch? It will slip. Id' fix it in a hurry if I were you. If your clutch gets soaked in oil, you will be replacing (again) soon, even if you fix the seal.

Why wouldn't you replace the main seal while you have it all apart? Once you get the transmission out, you're 90% of the way to the seal. Especially if you know it's leaking.

You should have about an inch of freeplay in the clutch pedal. If theres air in the system it might cause the clutch to not disengage, but wont cause it to slip. The rear main on my 87/2.9 has been leaking for years, but hasnt effected the clutch. When I need a clutch I will replace it. Was your old clutch plate oil soaked? According to Haynes a new clutch might slip for 30 or 40 normal starts until it is seated.
