OBD Code 442

Just picked up a 1997 Explorer XLT for my better half. It keeps setting code 442 (Evaporative Emissions Leak, Small). We have had if for 2 days now and it has set the code twice, only in the afternoon on the way home from work, not in the morning so far. Can anyone offer some places to look for the leak? The gasket on the fuel cap is slightly damaged, I will replace it tomorrow on the way home.

I think you just found the trouble, Dave. A new gasket or new cap should fix it.

Welcome to FTE!

If it doesn't

Had the same code on my 97. There is a vent solenoid above the spare tire that suffers from water damage. Mine rusted to pieces and stuck open. About $36 from Ford. If it looks bad, it probably is.

The fuel cap fixed it, I am glad I called my nephew as the first thing he mentioned was the cap, he is a Jeep mechanic so he runs into all kinds of problems. And thanks to all of you folks for the excellent assistance, have a great day.
