Angry Door Lock Problem

I have a 99 Explorer Sport and my driver's side door will not unlock anymore unless the inside door handle is pulled. The vehicle was at a Ford service center for some other work recently and I was informed that it would cost over $220.00 for them to replace the outer latch on the door. I just looked at it and I cannot figure out how to get the existing latch out of the door so I can do it myself. Does anybody have any ideas?

Cool

had the same problem, for me I removed the door panel, only two screws under the inner handle and pop of the pop fasteners
then I found that the solenoid had freed itself from the pathetic lone rivet that held it to the door body, I found a small screw and washer and from below the childlock switch I managed to refix the damn thing and so far it has held good!

Have fun- stay cool and for heavens sake drop the tire pressure to 28 all over- rides like a horse cart otherwise!

Bought a 2000 with drivers door problem. It would not lock. Thought dealer wanted too much for the latch and figured i could fix it for a lot less or get one from the salvage yard. Took door panel off and found rod off the latch. Think someone did this as a bandaid to keep the door from locking so they could get in and out without climbing thru the passenger side and so they could sell the vehicle to some unsuspecting sole like myself.
Found a very small spring about 1-1/4" long that had broken one of the hooks off the end of it. Looked inside the door on the passenger side to see where this spring went. Found a couple of spots where the hooks were attached, bent a new hook on the spring, stretched it a little to its original length, put it back together and guess what? It works!!!!! Took between 1 and 2 hours trying to figure out what to do plus breaks for a beer or two. I can take something apart and put it back together if I do it, just takes a little longer when someone else takes it apart. Alcohol kills brain cells and I figure the weaker cells get killed first, so I always feel smarter after a few beers.

Talking well done!

Great to see that the juice of life itself (beer), has once again played a critical role in the solving of this problem, you will find however that for more serious issues a bottle of Bells whiskey REALLY does help you think in a more productive manner- enabling a dastardly fix to any problem the explorer could throw at you!

best taken neat away from the wifes eyes as the constant nagging will dilute its effect on the complex thought stages involved in reaching the bottom of the bottle!

Cheers!
