I've looked around and can only find old threads from 2005 - 2007. Forgive me if I missed a more recent thread in my search.
What kind of fluid should we fill up in the 95 F150 5.8 with a E40D Tranny? It says "Mercon" on the stick but i keep reading mixed suggestions.
My local auto store as Mercon SP and Mecon LV. I have no idea what the difference is and the dudes behind the counter are clueless.
Ive read using Castrol Dex/Merc is ok?
Can a pro please chime in? I know this is a solid transmission so want to fill it with the correct fluid. Also don't want to waste over $100 on the wrong stuff and find out later I made a mistake.
One last thing, if we drain it and replace the filter, how many quarts/gallons does it take to fill usually?

As always - thanks guys
Mobil 1 Mercon V ATF is a good choice. Drop pan, and drain converter, takes about 16 qts to refill. There's a pipe plug in the converter, accessed through a rubber plug on the bell housing. Bump engine over until it is visible.

Thank you very much for the detailed instructions. We are gonna get crackin at it later today!
The trans takes Mercon V, the original Mercon was superseded. Do NOT use Mercon SP or LV unless you want to rebuild it.
Thanks Pal! I google imaged it and see the Motorcraft Mercon V (says Mercon compatible). Looks like i will have to buy THREE (5 quart) jugs. There goes $125.

$125? That's a deal! If it makes you feel any better, I have 313,000 miles on my original E4OD. Have been running this kind of fluid on Mark K's recommendation as he's a former Ford trans engineer that posts here and helps out.

There is plenty of other options. Just make sure the one you use is a Ford licensed product. The Supertech is a Ford licensed product and under 5.00 a quart.

Thanks! I dont mind spending extra for the best quality product. I think I'm gonna go with the motorcraft Mercon V. Its $40 for a 5qt jug.

Awesome. I have 140k on my original '96 F250 with the same transmission. I bought the truck new in '96 when I was 21 years old. Still driving it. Got my son a FREE '95 F150 XLT with 5.8 and the E40D back in June. We restored it over the past 5 months. Sanded frame down to bare metal and coated with POR15 along with all other parts. Yesterday was maiden voyage. He's pumped.
Remember if it meets Ford's requirements one fluid is just as good as the next for the application.
I can't argue with that. I think the biggest thing is to keep clean fluid in there that meets spec. I've just gone to full synthetic Mobil 1 on Mark's recommendation but the first 200,000 miles were on whatever met spec for the best price.
MERCON V is the right fluid. Dex/Merc may or may not work fine, depending on what the oil manufacturer decides to put in it. Those fluids are not licensed and the fluid manufacturer is able to produce anything they want and call it Dex/Merc. It's a meaningless designation. MERCON SP and MERCON LV are for newer transmissions and are guaranteed to destroy an E4OD.
95 lightning 207k never changed my trans fluid and if it don't leak I'm not going to still shifts great tows a boat now stays hooked up 99 % of time.
Transmission fluid should be changed periodically. There are additives in the fluid and heat will break it down. Are you still running the same engine oil since new?
Thanks all for the help. Just finished up. 16 qts total of Castrol Mercon V and new filter and gasket. Shifts beautifully. This was a truck I got for free and we spent alot of time on the frame, suspension, new stainless steel brake, transmission lines, tanks, fuel pumps, etc. We had no clue on the 351 and E40D, guy i got it from said it ran fine but brakes and lines are reason it sat untouched for 3 years. Besides a little hesitation off the get go which is definitely plugs or wires related, it drives like new! Think we are about $1700 into it. Not to bad! My son knows every bit of this truck now. Some good things are coming out of corona. LOL
