Anyone from Washington State with Pemco on an F-350. They’re claiming I have to insure as commercial? Driving record is great and credit is excellent and they still want $2k a year for the commercial coverage!
Obviously I’ll be looking elsewhere... but was taken back by this.
If you didn’t see my post it’s for ‘21 F-350 SW CCLB 4x
If this is your first f350 check with your state registry if motor vehicles and make sure you can register it as a Passanger registration. I know some states make you registere commercial if it's over a certain weight
I live in Washington and when looking for a truck usaa said it be same price for a 250 or 350.
Call back and get someone else on the line and see if the tell you something as the other person.
What is the GVWR of your F350? Not all F350's are created equal. If your truck is the higher weight rating you may have crossed a weight threshold for Pemco. I agree with other post that you should contact Pemco again to verify but also to get more details on why.

I had I even provided the information to her. Washington is a combined weight state so anything over 16,000#'s must have a DOT tag and is then classified as commercial use: https://www.dol.wa.gov/forms/420012.pdf
My GVWR is 12,400#'s, but I wont be towing often at this point. I'll post an update on the insanity I went through...

12,400# GVWR and this wasn't the issue, though this was my concern... see my update below...
So after sending the DOT requirements for Sate of Washington and explaining I know multiple people that are in the state and have never been told this she responded like this:
"I’m sorry I didn’t mention in my prior email that it’s not about the usage it’s about the size of the vehicle. For a large vehicle such as yours, insurance companies see the risk as commercial, because of the damage it can do in an accident. I’m happy to discuss this with you" Guarantee this is as is now typical in Seattle a self-righteous "I'm going to save the word by telling you how to live" Seattleite interjecting her opinion vs company policy...
And I would be right... I called talked to another agent and I was quoted and he said they've never had an issue with insuring any of the light-duty trucks. He stated if it's truly for commercial or has a flat bed then they would sublet out commercial coverage.
So about ten e-mails by a so called agent that obviously has an issue with "large vehicles"
Have quote now and is $120/month for 100K/300K comp & collision.
So all is good now and thank you to those that responded!

Reading the form, a DOT tag is only required if the truck is used commercially and exceeds the weight threshold.

Yup that's how I read it. First section if you answer yes to any you have to have a DOT number, but next section if it's personal then no... Think next threshold for a CDL requirement is 26,000#'s for the state...
I'm in Maple Valley Wa, and had issues with my 2020 F450, the registration says "commercial" talked to the state DOL three times, over the phone, and was told that any vehicle in WA that has a scale weight over 8200 lbs (maybe it was 8600, I can't remember now) is listed as a commercial vehicle, but as long as I only use it for personal use and do not go over 26K in combined load I didn't have to worry that its listed as commercial nor need a CDL. I finally gave up arguing about it and just drive the truck. I have Nationwide insurance and they didn't say anything regarding being a commercial vehicle, but I did have to argue with the Credit Union as they initially denied the loan because they "do not do auto loans on commercial vehicles". They quoted some wikipedia listing of truck classes where F450 chassis cab was listed as a commercial vehicle but the F450 pick-up was listed separately, once I pointed that out that I had purchased a pickup to them they approved the loan.

Good Ol' Washington
I suspect this won't be last issue with registering being my next challenge. I know in the 80's in Washington you use to have to put GVWR stickers on the truck. Think my uncle still has an '84 F-250 with the markings still on it lol...

So just received my registration and plates yesterday and sure enough it is registered as commercial. I called WADOL and it’s correct the threshold is 12,000#’s and they go in 2,000# increments. So registration states 14,000GVWR. I said it’s only for personal use and she said just drive it nothing else I need to do or worry about. I said well that’s an issue as seems there is a disconnect as WSP rules state registered commercial vehicular must follow 10,000GVWR rules and laws.
That’s pretty significant as that means technically per WSP you must follow commercial speed limit signs and AWD exemption for chains going over the pass is excluded i.e. you must chain and carry.
Obvioulsy as is typical to Washington there is inconsistency. Have a friend with and F-450 and has personalized plates “Red-Neck” 😂. And you’re not suppose to be able to have personalized plates for commercial either.
Just going to drive like a pickup until it’s an issue I guess... Nice thing is my insurance only went up $47👍

This is a prime example of why Ford offer the "Factory Derate" options, so that you and I don't have to deal with problems like this. Glad you got it mostly figured out though.

Well, problem documentation is not clear for Washington. They state when a DOT sticker is required and even within that you answer the questions and it gets to to “personal vehicle” below 16,000#’s.
I even asked the dealer did I need to select the 11,900# rating for Washington and answer was no. It wasn’t like I went in blind, as I researched and asked, but obviously with information provided by WADOL it is 💩 https://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregist...lvehicles.html
Even when you call WADOL it took three people before I could get a straight explanation. Such are bureaucracies
I think main issue is these trucks have increased capability that the regulations haven’t kept up.
