Distributer worn out?

86 f150 302 efi. When I time the engine at 10 degrees with the spout connector removed, I get a steady reading with the timing light. But when I plug the spout back in and look at the timing, it's jumping around more than I think is normal , maybe by as much as 6-8 degrees. I'm assuming that if it's steady with the spout disconnected the distributer is good. Is there something else that causes the timing to jump around like this?

Cool

Yeah, thats your computer making adjustments to the timing. Thats why you un-plug the spout connector to set the timing. I wouldn't worry about it too much if your getting good performance and decent mileage.

One other possibility though if that is not the case is you may want to check for vaccum leaks. Vaccum leaks cause lots of hard to find problems.

Thanx for the reply. I'm getting good preformance and 20 mpg highway, don't know about in town. I thought it could be somewhat normal, but have also suspected vacum. Never done a vacum test so I'll try that and then check for leaks.
