egr valve question

I blocked off the egr valve because I was getting some hesitation at times. The hesitation is gone so it worked. But now I get a pinging/tapping sound at the same time that the hesitation was happening. My question is, can the egr valve flutter(and this is the sound that I'm hearing) or is it either open or closed?

This is a good question and one I have wondered about, I haven't run across the info I need to completely understand EGR system effects.
EGR does effect your mixture and it may be that you are running lean and the noise you are hearing is detonation.
When your EGR opens it lets exhaust gas into your intake air so that some of your intake air is replaced by exhaust. Since exhaust has less oxygen than air it would richen your mixture. Does the computer compensate for this? I don't know. If your sensors are providing false info, the computer couldn't possibly compensate.

When you say you blocked off your EGR, I assume you put a piece of a beer can or something under your EGR? Maybe the valve is hitting this? Maybe you could look for a mark on the piece you used for a block?

I blocked it off completely with a piece of thin metal with a gasket on both sides. Just for kicks I'll take it off and check for marks but with the thickness of the gasket I would'nt think it would hit.

Now that I think about it, I think it moves the other way and you would have noticed if it hit while closed.
Did you check error codes to see if it sets a code for lean mixture?

The EGR is th exhaust gas recirculation valve and it is located above the alternator and is attached to the passenger side of the intake plenum. It allows a prescibed amount of recicrculated exhaust gasses back into the intake manifold at cruise speed as a form of emission control . Unfortunately it also can cause some driveability problems such as a miss or stumble at cruise speed. Blocking the EGR off will usually fix this problem but in some cases, as was mine, a ping started after the installation. I was using Shell regular 87 octane gas. I fixed this by using mid grade gas or Chevron regular which I feel is a far superior fuel. Unfortunatly only Shell gives air miles and I consume a lot of fuel and the air miles add up quickly. My wife and I flew to England a few years back on air miles! As for Shell,I have had engines that flatly refused to run on it. Some times a block- off plate with a small hole in it will do the trick too.

Is this connected to the tubes that run into each runner on my exhaust manifold? If so did you remove everything and plug the manifold holes or leave everything in tact?

Thanks,
Luke

All I did was put a block-off plate between the egr valve and the intake manifold. I read from numerous posts that this was a cheap and quick way to get rid of the hesitation. My only problem now is this pinging and I don't know if blocking it off is causing another problem.

I suspect that the pinging in middle throttle openings may be caused by a blocked or malfunctioning EGR causing a lean mixture, I am still not sure.

you are getting the pinging because of not having the EGR. Your combustion temps are higher now resulting in pinging. Try backing your timing up a little ( 2-4 degrees)
