3sp + OD Manual?
Buddy of mine just bought a 1987 F150 Plain Jane with a 300 I6. For a transmission he has the old SRO (3 speed + OD Manual)that I saw in a lot of cars and a few truck in the late 70's and early 80s. I thought Ford had dropped this thing by 1987. Could this be original or is it a replacement unit? I know these things where junk in the late 70s but did they ever get them to work correctly? The one in his truck shifts surprising well will very little slop in the shift pattern.

I think it's actually a TOD, or top mounted (shifter) overdrive. It was replaced in 88 with the M5OD mazda unit. I have what you describe in my '87. It's probably the original transmission. I have 130,000 miles on mine and it's still working, although the synchros are showing some age.
