Ranger RPMs
I am having a problem with my Ford Ranger. I have the 2002 XLT 4.0 L 4x4 model. When driving on the highway for long periods (over half an hour) at approximatley 120km/h or 75mph the RPMs on the tachometer suddenly shoot up from 3000 to about 4300 and stay there indefinitely. It appears that my truck has switched to a lower gear and will not switch back. I have tried turning the overdrive function on and off to coax the RPMs back down but this does not work. Punching the gas for a short boost does not do the trick either. I have brought my truck in to the dealership for diagnostics but the mechanic said that the computer is not giving him any codes and that the truck appears to be functioning normally. My truck currently has 30 000 km's on it and the warranty expires at 60 000. I am worried that the engine is under too much strain when I drive on the highway and that it will eventually become damaged after my warranty has expired. I have the feeling that these elevated RPMs are not normal. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause may be? What should I do about it? Help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Phil
