The 302 was a good engine. Built from 1967 through 1996.

How high? Have you done anything recently that caused it to change of has it always been high? Did someone or perhaps you moved the throttle stop screw?

OP searching for the right words:

Suggestion:

Start at the beginning here. You got when it was not running. What have you done to make it run, and what results? What was the next thing you did?

through 2001 actually. Explorers essentially got leftover Mustang motors starting in 1996. They made some new parts to use the parts/ blocks up

I’ll accept the correction. I wasn’t thinking about the 5.0L Explorers. Full size 1/2T and 3/4T LD trucks went to Modular motors in ‘97.

i put a battery and starter in and turned the key on with some pliers. jumped it out at the solenoid it cranked four times and started and went to a high idle about 2000 rpm, not sure of the exact rpm because i shut it off before the engine died. right now i am trying to fix the ign mechanism, it is all gummed up. what size is the roll pin the holds the rod in for the ign switch?

There is no roll pin at the ignition switch. There are two studs on the lower column and the switch is held in place with nuts.

When you turn the key does the rod move at the switch? If not the actuator is probably broken.

the ign switch is activated by a rod. at the upper end, it goes into the hole in the activator above that hole is a pin to keep the rod from jumping up out of the hole someone put a cotter pin in that hole and it was too long and kept catching on the housing i need to put the original little roll pin in there, but that was missing and still is.

fixed that part. still haven't got the roll pin it is smaller than a 3/16 so i put a cotter pin back in and bent the head down and everything clears and moves smoothly without binding. getting the rest back together was a pain but i got it timed just right and everything clicked together, now when i turn the key everything lights up. when it is light out i will work on the clutch switch. but it might have to wait because i was informed by the landlord we have to move. i got five maybe 10 minutes of work left on the truck but i have to find a different place now. thank God we don't have a lot of stuff after the fire. the lever that i push to release the key broke on me yesterday i was not a happy camper i can still access it but it is a bit more difficult.

how can you tell where the ign switch is in relation to being in run and start? so far i crank it to start with the clutch pedal down and it won't crank and no acc.

You cannot rotate the key backwards from OFF to ACCESSORY? Without being able to see what is going on, my guess is that the actuator is not timed correctly. You could take the ignition switch off the column and manually move it to start bypassing everything in the column.

I don’t recall...Did you try starting it manually with the old switch plugged in? If not you don’t have to remove anything except the connector from the new switch and plug it into the old one. You can test all the positions to see if you have accy power, start and run.
