Question Is it the Right Flywheel?

After completing a engine swap (from 302 to 351w), there was a noticible engine vibration.

My mechanic thinks the Remanufactured Flywheel I bought might not be balanced properly. (The 351w came out of an automatic).
The main bearings are bad, so I'll be pulling the engine again and putting in a crankshaft kit.

While the engine is out, is there a sure way to check the balance of the flywheel? How much should it weight, are there numbers to look for on the flywheel, et c.???

Thanks,
Farlight7

The 351 uses a 28oz balance flywheel/flexplate. So if you reused or ordered one for the 302 then the vibration is more likely than not the flexplate somthing like 82 down used a 28 oz and 82 or so up used a 50 oz, hope this helps some. later

I ordered the Flywheel for the 1990 351w. I only hope that's what actually came in the box. Anyway to check to make sure?

Do the remanufacturers check the incoming cores, and confirm they are labeled correctly?

Is there a part number on it? If so call them back and see if you can reference the number if it doesn't have a weight stamped on it somewhere. Worse case scenario I would think a tranny shop could double check it for you. Did you install a pilot bearing?

Given you didn't metion any vibration before the swap I would say that the flywheel would be a good place to start as you mentioned. Where you able to find a number?

i am not a pro at this or a mechanic. but i swapped a 300 6cyl standard, to a 351 standard that was an automatic, now my point being is that the flywheel measured the same and bolted up the same and i was getting ready to bolt the 351w in that evening when a mechanic friend told me that i would get vibration and tear out the bottom end within a week , he mentioned that all flywheels are weighted differently for all engines, and thanks to his advice i didn't regret spending the 350.00 bucks, unfortunately i found out that getting a flywheel for a 351 w is not easy but not hard to find but expensive.
like i said though i am not a pro or a mechanic but hope this helps you make the decision

If you can't cross reference the numbers take a tape measure and measure the actual weight on the flywheel. Post it back on here and I'll measure the weight on a flexplate with a 50 oz weight on it. If you put the 2 side by side it is very noticeable which is the 50 oz

Will do, hopefully I get the engine out this weekend. But I want to get this vibration/flywheel problem figured out. Don't want to ruin a brand new crank and bearings.

Any chance engine vibration could be caused by the harmonic balancer??

Or could the crank be so worn that its wobbling around??

Auto to Auto: that's the way to go. I got my engine from a van with auto, but in went into my truck with 5 speed manual.

Finally got the engine out of the truck. Did it by myself, 3 1/2 hours from truch to engine stand. Only dropped it once : ).
Not really dropped, just let the cherry picker down too fast.

The flywheel info:

Casting numbers are E8TR-AA
5 7D3

the dimensions of the counter weight are 1 1/2 inches high
5 1/2 inches at the widest and 3 3/4 inches at the narrow.

Thanks for all the help.

O.K., went out and measured the flexplate that came with my AOD. It is out of a late modle Mustand so it should be 50 oz. i know side by side with the one I bought for my 351W there was a noticable difference between the sizes of the weights,
Measuring this one at the top of the radius is 4 1/4" bottom of radius is 4" it is 15/16" wide and 1/2 thick. Does not sound anywhere as large as the one you have so I am at a loss.
WWhen I did my AOD swap I went to Autozone and bought a reman. flexplate for a 1990 F150 5.8 AOD. It might be worth it too you to at least take yours to a parts house and compare it too one out of a 90 F150 5.8 AOD. Mine was'nt but $45.
Hope this helps
Clint
