I have a 2017 F-250 XLT 6.7l diesel with over 150k, I just replaced all the original glow plugs after getting a code that #8 was problem and it's still running rough! I'm still getting the same code, but I noticed that when I took out glow plug 8 the tip was broken off! That is very concerning for me. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thank you for the codes, this will help the others more knowledge with this provide some guidance.
Do you know if #8 glow plug is getting power? P0678 leads me to think open circuit.
The biggest concern is the broken glow plug tip though. I'm wondering if the glow plug tip broke as a result of a mechanical issue with #8? I would think a compression test is needed. The glow plug tips are closer to the rim of the piston (than the injector) so if it broke off, I imagine the piston has turned it from a small round object to thin and flat.
I would check with your local Ford service dept and see if the engine is still under thee PowerStroke warranty. If so, take and let Ford diag the problems.
Had the same issue with my 7.3, it was an easy fix,
lube it up with kroil, let it sit overnight then crank the engine, with any luck the compression will push it out, be sure to put a blanket or something over the engine in that are, that plug is going to come out like a bullet!
The tip is long gone, it already meet the piston and is in the DPF by now. Hopefully it didn't hurt the turbo. All you can do is put a new glow plug in and drive and see what the long term issues are.
I replaced it with all new glow plug and the truck is running the same as before! Like it's missing. Check engine light is on with the same codes. Is it safe to drive? I did notice that while test driving the exhaust filter cleaner indicator light on!
I had a 7.3 that ate an entire glow plug tip. It survived, surprisingly unscathed. I hate to say it, but I don't think you got so lucky. Your next move should be getting a compression test done and hope for the best.
