Clutch recommendations?

My truck is a 2001 F-250 7.3 4X4 w/ZF-6. I’m about to order a fresh rebuilt trans and I’m gonna add a new clutch while I’m at it.

There’s lots of clutch options out there, so I’m asking your opinions on clutches. I don’t know which is best or worse, so I appreciate any help.

Anyone? All I could find was Valair and South Bend. Any preferences one way or the other?

I am having the same thing done now on my F-450. The 3rd-4th syncro is out, and mine pops out of 4th when you top a hill. The clutch works perfectly, but the shop says I have to have a new clutch if getting a new transmission. Think they should check the clutch out before replacing it. Just bought the truck, maybe they replaced the clutch.

I just did a South Bend. I would also look at the Kevlar pilot bearing.

I lost fifth gear completely. I’ve been driving it like that for over a year now, and it makes towing anything with some weight a real bear. My clutch was fine up until a month ago. I cooked it good backing a large boat out of the driveway from hell. It still works, but I get bad chatter if I’m backing a trailer.

I did consider direct drive, but I also wanted a non synchronized transmission too. No such luck finding one.

I‘m still debating on the two brands, but a Kevlar pilot bearing? I haven’t seen or heard of that.

Is yours the 6 speed? My 6 speed reverse is granny low, and backing up a trailer is no problem. On my older 5 speed transmission, the reverse is fast, and must put truck in low lock to back up a big trailer.

Yes, it’s a six speed. My reverse is closer to second gear than first. Probably inbetween the two.

Is there a difference in gear ratio in 6 speed reverse on different size trucks? Do not want to lose the granny low reverse on my F-450. Trailers are major part of my world for this truck.

The ZF6 all have the same gear ratio.
