No power

After hours reading through the forum I still cannot find a solution or idea...Hopefully someone will have already been where I'm at..
This is a 85 Ranger with a 87 2.3 fuel injection and a 88 computer telling it what to do...It ran like a top for about 300 miles after I bought it...

Took a trip around the lake, got about 22 miles to the gallon, truck ran great.Had real good power...
Next day truck would not run, when it did the motor bucked and jumped all around the compartment and it was undrivable...After a few hours I got it to fire and run but it ran bad, would not maintain an idle, surging, bucking black smoke pouring out the exhaust...Relay boxes passengers side engine compartment on the wheel well (going to the fuel pump and computer) were rattling big time...When it did allow me to drive it the milage dropped to about 9 mpg...Took it to the shop...
Replaced the pump in the fuel tank, the fuel filter, plugs, wires, rotor, distr. cap, o2 sensor, injectors..
Cleaned-flushed maf, map, throttle body and linkage, everything that deals with gas/air flow, thefuel presure is steady at 35 lbs and climbs up to 37+ when opening the throttle...No more engine codes to trace or chase down...I've put just under a thousand dollars into this motor and though it runs fine, it has no power....In fact, it looses speed when you hit 5th gear on a level road at 55 mph, like the vacum advance is not working....It runs real good, no black smoke, no misses, fair idle, no surging anymore,it burns clean..when floored there is a trace of power but that power is just not there anymore...
Any idea's????????????????????????????

Welcome to FTE theprophet,
I also have a 4-banger gutless wonder! These engines were definately made under-powered! I, much like yourself, would really appreciate a resolution to this no-power problem! Just recently Ken00 + stepman helped me tremendously with the pulling of my codes + I'm still working on them. It will be an up hill battle, but one of these days I'm going find the answer, with the help of the great people here at FTE!

I can't tell what's wrong from here. Has the battery been disconnected during any part of the repairs? Do it anyways. Leave it off for as long as you can(all day at work?). Later, put it back on, start it up and leave it at idle for 15 minutes then head for the highway. Possibly that system will re-set itself to "normal".

Hi again theprophet,
After rereading + analizing your post this morning, I'd like to make some suggestions to your problem.

Considering that mine is a '90 and yours an '85. i'd be looking for rust where the grounding wires are because mine has lots of the stuff (rust) and may be a factor!

Another thing is that the '88 computer may not be "in tune" with the '85 system!

Check the posts, this is were you may find your answer to that question!
