This device has been installed on my dashboard, now that I’m finally getting around to learning my brakes, I figure I’ll ask the experts.
The black **** rotates, appearing to apply (or relieve) pressure on a hydraulic brake line coming out the bottom. The other end of the line connects into the rear brake line outlet from the master cylinder.
My questions are:
1. What is it and how would it be used appropriately?
2. When I have all my lines reconnected and go to fill the system and bleed the brakes, what should I do with this thing?
Thanks as always,
Tom
Here’s the device Bottom connections (it’s wired into the starter relay circuit I think) And here’s how it connects to the rear brake line at the cylinder
First thing you do is remove it entirely from the system. That's a antique trailer brake controller, its obsolete. They are also known to internally fail and dump brake fluid in the cab.
Tom,
That is for trailer brakes. If you plan to tow a trailer, you'll need it. If you don't plan to tow a trailer, suggest removing it completely. It doesn't add any resale valve to your truck, but could actually detract value, future buyer might think the truck has had experienced a hard working towing life and suspect either the auto transmission or clutch could go out at any time, among a premature worn engine.
That valve can be used to apply trailer brakes by hand without using applying your truck pedal brake, for instances to prevent jack knifing situation or to only your trailer brakes when descending a mountain grade.
That is a old 3rd generation photon powered warp drive accelerator with adjustable laser guidance system (manual engagement) see I said it is old and can also be used as a trailer brake controller. X2 on remove it from the system and cap off or remove the T blocks and then bleed your brakes. Flip sale it to a crowd that maybe still like them.
Wow bold move to admit that on a open public internet forum. Must be part of the required therapy, but it seems to be working good for ya. Lol Jk At least it is not an old flux capacitor, you remember all those troubles that caused Marty and Doc Brown? I bet taking that thing off the truck will help too.
After being in the truck for 44 ,years I finally removed the exact same thing. Since it was my Dad's truck I already know it's history of pulling heavy boats, campers and trailers. No plans for any of that now. The 2019 F150 I have will take care of any towing duties that might arise. But nothing over the GVWC. Got a good chuckle for the creative adjectives describing ancient space relics. Haha
