New engine cost

So, this is for a 2017 Ford Explorer with the NON-turbo 3.5L.

I'm asking in the truck section because it's so popular and that's what I have....so I recognize and respect you guys. I don't know anyone in the other forum areas.

A coworker was in parking lot when he heard a strange sound and his Explorer died and wouldn't restart. He's got 77K miles and has kept up with all maintenance.
It got towed to a Ford dealership, this is what they diagnosed and quoted. Does it seem right? IF it's too high, would you go to an independent shop to get the work done?

What are your thoughts? Here are the comments by text from the Service Tech.
“So it does need a long block. Metal in the pan, engine is out of time. Meaning whatever caused, most likely a timing chain tensioner went bad, it made the camshafts get out of sync”

Quote from the dealership:

Here is a breakdown of pricing for the replacement of the long block assembly in the 2017 Explorer with VIN ending in HGD16738.
$5011.65 Ford Engine Assembly (Oil Pan to Valve Covers)
$377.00 Misc Parts and Fluids (oil, antifreeze, filter, single use bolts, etc)
$3034.00 R&R labor includes A/C recharge service
$444.56 Tax (tax only applicable to the parts)
$8,867.21 out the door

****I realize this post might get moved..

Depending on mileage the engine may still be under powertrain warranty, it goes to 60K and 5 years if memory serves.

He has 77,000 miles on it, it is no longer in warranty.

Not a chance! Take it somewhere else that is competent. The base 3.5 is so cheap used I would never buy new or reman. Contact LKQ who is the largest parts recycler around. You can get a used under 30k mile engine for less than 1k delivered. They even have less than 5k engines for 1600.00 delivered. There is no shortage of these engines used.

The transverse 3.5 is a little different than the one in the F150. You are in the wrong forum for this.

That said iirc $9000 for a new motor from a dealer sounds about right. That is to say, expensive.

Any option for a used engine? Reman?

The last place I would go is a Dealership for this.

I’ll tell him to look for a local shop with good reviews and to contact LKQ. Great info!

More good info, I didn’t realize they are different.

Holy smokes!
Is installation less $$ with a complete engine?
It seems it would be a lot less labor.

Book shows 19 hours labor for engine R&R, here labor is $164.00 hr shop rate. I think the initial labor is a little too high.

I sent him all the info and pics from LKQ, plus your thoughts on labor.
He's going to look for a local shop to quote him swapping out engines. One of the low mileage engines is less than an hour away from him.

Disappointing and more than a bit surprising to hear of a failure at 77K. Overall the 3.5 L has earned a good reputation, but of course exceptions to every rule…

Just out of curiosity, do you know the maintenance history?

It's an exception for sure.
This is one of our company vehicles. From day one, all maintenance has been done at a local Lincoln dealership.
All services have been done in advance of the schedule, but he did use the vehicle OLM for oil change intervals.

Wild. Even the best designs fail, though. But those engines are nearly bulletproof, even if they have a terrible water pump design.

It makes me wonder if the water pump didn’t cause the failure. Coolant in the oil?
